Wood Care Basics
With proper care of your wood furniture, you can keep it looking beautiful for generations to come.
Remember, because each piece of wood is unique, you can expect variations in grain appearance and stain coloration. Random distressing adds a distinctive heirloom appearance to the finish of some pieces. Distressing can come in the form of burnishing, accentuated knots and grains, rubbed through finish, speckles, worm holes, over spray, pock marks, chain marks, burl, and sap pockets.
Here are some Do’s and Don'ts for furniture care:
- DO use a good cream polish 2 or 3 times a year to polish your wood furniture.
- DO NOT use over-the-counter spray polishes. They tend to build up and diminish the shine of your wood furniture.
- DO use coasters with glasses as the condensation on the outside of the glass can ruin a beautiful table.
- DO NOT let a spill sit long before wiping it up with a dry cloth. Wood and water do not mix well.
- DO use table pads, trivets or other protective devices when putting hot dishes on a wood surface.
- DO NOT move a bed while it is set-up. Always remove bedding and disconnect side rails to avoid structural damage.
- DO treat drawer glides with Vaseline or candle wax for smooth operation.
- DO NOT subject furniture to direct sunlight. This can cause fading.
- DO store table leaves flat. And always use two people when opening and closing dining tables or when inserting or removing leaves.
- DO NOT place wood furniture in close contact with extreme heat or cold. Extreme temperature swings affect the moisture content of the wood and can cause discoloration, cracking or even warping.
When moving furniture always lift it with another person. Never slide furniture!!! It can damage hardwood floors and snag carpet and even damage the furniture itself.
Furniture is HEAVY and FRAGILE. When possible, use a professional delivery service.
Accidents happen. Use fabric protection on upholstered dining chairs to insure your investment.
